I have no idea how this video snuck past me. I am completely in love with Holly Miranda's voice and "I'd rather Go Blind" is my all time favorite Etta James song. Not to mention Yours Truly is the best thing to ever happen to intimate live performances . Anywhoo press play and get some goose bumps and then go run around in the rain.
This groove starts out with this amazing 70's attack sample on a lot of what has been wrong with the music industry in the past. A problem that I feel is finally being leveled out. Companies like Capitol Records and Sub-Pop seemed to have simmered down and independent Labels are being brought onto the shoulders of the talent that they choose to have represent them.... In short we are currently living in a time where music runs as free as love.... For the sake of analysis as far as this song is concerned I feel that Radio Dept. takes on some of the best aspects of Daft Punk in this celebratory jam of good times. Enjoy!
This list is in no particular order these are just simply what I believe to be the top 10 videos of 2010. Enjoy!
OK let's get this thing rollin. First up is The Fan Video for LCD Soundsystem's, "Home". There are multiple reasons that this video reached the top Ten for me. I love Robots, I love to party, and I love love love this song. This jam pretty much got me through the entire year. Director Rick Darge paints a beautiful picture of how you can never be too young, or too old, to party. Band: LCD Soundsystem "Home" Director: Rick Darge (funwunce)
So when I first heard the track Bombay by El Guincho my legs started moving on their own and before I knew it I was 35 margaritas deep in my boxers fist pumping my life into oblivion. Now seriously, watch this video, it's full of nothing but awesomeness and more boobies than you could shake a stick at. Director Nicolás Mendez takes on this super dope Carl Sagan aspect with this video to remind us how random and great the world is. Band: El Guincho "Bombay" Director: Nicolás Mendez
So I'm pretty sure that this song came out at the very beginning of this year if it was earlier than I apologize. The kids over at Yours Truly constantly blow me away and have a very unique filming style that makes you feel like a band is sitting in your lap preforming their hearts out, only for you. That being said this video is that feeling times infinity. I remember watching this and being floored at how beautiful it can be when a large group of people come together to create something. Band: The Morning Benders "Excuses" Director: Yours Truly
There's no way that Spike Jonze directed a video and wasn't gonna be on this list. He's directed every amazing skate video and music video and this video is no exception. There is such an amazing feeling that happens when your young that seems to surface less and less once life sets in. I feel that this video blares out like a visual siren all the silly, scary, happy, and angry things that come along with being a child trying to fit into the next stages of your life. Band: Arcade Fire "The Suburbs" Director: Spike Jonze
Hey does anyone wanna go to this super bad ass alien techno party.... Really no one OK your loss suckers. seriously check out the triplets of neon up against the concrete wall those kids are murdering the dance floor. Band: Yaesayer "One" Director: Radical Friend
One of the craziest videos I've seen all year was this kids final project for his illustration course. this very lucid and stream of consciousness style of illustrating reminds me of the scene in dumbo when he starts hallucinating pink elephants everywhere. This is the perfect accompaniment the Animal Collective's Lion in a Coma. Band: Animal Collective "Lion in a Coma" Director: Ori Toor
This video and song are way too much fun. The hommies over at pogo did an amazing job remixing the scenes and sounds from the movie UP to give us this very captivating video. Band: POGO "Upular" Director: POGO
OK so Anthony Fransisco Schepperd has gotta be one of the most talented animators of our time. This video makes me rethink my existence in the world. His themed use of technology infecting nature is off the charts. His color scheme perfect. All in all this guys is a mother fucking genius and this song is crazy dope as well. Band: Blockhead "the music scene" Director: Anthony Fransisco Schepperd
Before the official video for Cee Lo's "Fuck You" came out there was this. Personally I much prefer this version . There is something particularly hilarious about the font and color choices. Plus I really like having every single word of this song being shoved in your face cause I've definitely been in this type of "Fuck You" situation and this is exactly how it goes down. Band: Cee Lo Green "Fuck You" Director: ?
I know that Yours Truly has appeared twice on this list but for good reason. The kids are amazing. this video in particular captures how nuts it is to have a solo project and play all of the instruments. Plus I really like this version of the song it kind of strips away all of the dance-y-ness and gives this amazing surf vibe that makes me wanna mac hella face in the sunshine. Band: Toro y Moi "You Hid" Director: Yours Truly
There it is folks that's my list for the year I hope you liked it and if you did please share it with your friends. Thanks a million Love, This Moving Picture
Anyone who's read more than five posts that I've made knows that I have a very tender spot for female vocals. That being said, it should be prefaced with the fact that i take the female voice very seriously and not just anyone with an "inside out dick" can be invited into the vocal realm that i consider to be great... In retrospect, I must say, that my week has been pretty much consumed in the sounds of greatness that is, My Friend Wallis. If you like what you hear click this to get a free download of their album "When the Blue Turned Yellow."

OK I'm pretty excited over here, one of my favorite SD bands, Mrs Magician, got a video together. Nicolás Prados edited this super awesome and playful old school footage together to make this crazy dope ass video for the song There's no God. Seriously though checkout when hommie straight socks a bird in the face it's pretty comedy.....Peep the goods.
If you're a shitty dancer you might not want to hit that play button cause you're about to make a straight ass out of yourself. This is Unknown Mortal Orchestra's first EP and the shits got me two steps away from doin the Charleston. Below is the option to buy the album and it's only ₤4 (whatever the fuck that means.) Enjoy!
Ok so this is some throwback shit goin on right now..... I Just saw the Department of eagles take away show form like 2007 for the first time tonight and I'm straight smitten over here. I remember when the album, In ear park, first came out and I couldn't even believe it. Anywhoo here's the video and below are the recorded versions of the songs so you can really appreciate how great these guys are.
And for a little more current shit here's a track off of the Archive 2003-2006 LP that was released earlier this year. It's my favorite one on the LP for sure.
I don't know exactly what's going on with me and this song but it's definitely something great. I guess I should start from the beginning...... This song quickly rolls into a very pathetic, out of tune, plea for revenge to straight slam down with this girls best friend. And like a stream of clarity, the richest, hang-ten-guitar-solo, rips right through all of the day to day bullshit that seems to be represented in the first 51 seconds of this jam. From there it seems to manifest into an almost confessional of how fucked up it can be to just breath around the opposite sex sometimes. When all is said and done the song offers no conclusions to these very common problems, but instead paints a very vivid and realistic portrait of what it is to exist in love and confusion.
My favorite up and coming band this whole year has, without a doubt, been Beach Fossils. I feel like they go into my head at night and steal all my best dreams and then turn them into amazing lucidly strung together tracks of greatness. They have impressed me more than any other new band this year and today they released a track off of their soon to be released EP What a Pleasure, and of course I love it. Listen up! Beach Fossils Calyer
OK so tonight should be pretty comedy. Flesh the racist crayon is playing Soda Bar. Charlyne Yi drums and sings back-up and if you've ever seen Paper Heart you know that this chick is a hilarious little cutie-pie. David Liebe Hart from Tim and Eric awesome show great job is gracing us with his presence as well, and i can tell you from experience that this guy can belt it. Not to mention that San Diego's craziest mother fuckin disk jockey, DJ Tomas K. Bohan, will be spinnin the heat in between sets so hold on to your dicks........ I left a little preview of the night below check it out and I'll see you kids at Soda Bar. Flesh the racist crayonFarmer's Love Song David Liebe Hart
OK so I am obsessed with the kids over at POGO they never cease to amaze me. Upular is still on heavy rotation and a few weeks ago they released this video for "wishery" where they tear through the audio on Snow White to produce some utter greatness. Enjoy
I've been dancing a hole into my bedroom floor all morning to this new funky fresh jam. As far as solo projects go this kid is beyond impressive. Be forewarned, after you press that play button you might find yourself in the streets of Brooklyn on the set of a dope ass blacksploitation film, bullets flying and super fly hunnies around every corner. What are you waiting for? Press that button and put this shit in your brain.
I hope they use this song in the New Ghost Busters movie. I could totally see Ernie Hudson blastin the shit outta some spooky ghosts to this jam... Seriously though get into WALSH it's good for you. Here, you know what? Fuck it, just go here and download some of their dopeness for free cause the dewds over at Dracula Horse are just givin that shit away. While your over there don't forget to pickup all the COOLRUNNINGS that you can get your little mitts on, you wont regret it!
A few years back Portuguese film maker, Pedro Maia, collaborated with Panda Bear's,Noah Lennox, to make a short film to accompany two of his songs. Now that the festival tour is over Pedro has released this film entitled Memory onto his Vimeo account for all to view. click the flick and drone on brotha.
I'm kinda late to the scene when it comes to Lower Dens...... They've been on my back-burner list of things to get into and YT made that a lil easier for me the other day when they released this video. Aside from home girl looking like mac from mac and me in this video I'm a pretty big fan. Peep the goods.
Heads up SD tomorrow should be a pretty dope show at the Tin Can Alehouse. Nicole Kidman is playing along with friend of This moving Picture; Kevin Greenspon. I'm pretty stoked it should be rad! Peep KG's new video for the song Already Dead. It's souper fun..... See you kids tomorrow night!
This jam just fell into my inbox today and I've been rocking it all morning.... There's some dope math going on in the guitar parts and the vocals dig into your brain and bury themselves in the nostalgia and longing region. Check out The Whisperlights band camp page here to preview their album Wake Up Dead. It's only 5 beans...... So really, it's up to you, you can either get some shitty cold cut trio from Subway or buy this rad album and support a few zonies.
This is a lil off base from the music that i usually post but this is one of the most amazing acts of street art I've ever seen in my whole life. Blu presents to us the evolution of the entire planet from it's conception and even offers up some of their own predictions into the earth's demise. I'm seriously stunned. This is such an amazing artistic accomplishment. Please share this with your friends!!!! ART IS LOVE!!!!!
OMG!!! Ok so either this is the best choreography of all time or some really dope editing skills have been applied to this video... Either way i don't really give a shit. This video for "Fake It" is so effing crazy I can't even believe it..... Watch homeboy doing the backwards bicycle kick dive it's pretty fresh. Seriously this shit will blow your mind!
I've been in love with these 3 synth beauties for way too long. I mean certain things are just too cute, like baby monkeys riding on the backs of pigs, or that little kid that was in Jerry Maguire, and I feel like these chicks are on that list somewhere. Their new interactive coloring book video, yes you heard me correctly, is crazy fun.... Above is my picture click below to play with their new video for Knight of Wands
Holly Pizza Party this shit is awesome. Director Matt Wells released this fan video for the track "Infinity Guitars". Shit's pretty comedy...... I guess the lesson learned here is, be careful what you wish for. Don't go askin for a Pizza Party and then act all surprised when like a hundred mother fuckers who look like the Mario brothers wearing chef hats come into your apartment guns-a-blazing... And seriously who invited thong-man covered in flower? I mean judging by the way these kids live their lives there's like a 10% chance of them ever getting laid, but with homeboy whipping his junk around everywhere you can kiss that 10% goodbye.
So I've been coming around to this whole Jeans Wilder phase that's been creeping up on the scene. At first it really wasn't my thing, but since he's an SD boy I had to pay closer attention.... I don't know, jams like "Sparkler" bring me to this super chill melancholy place in the center of my brain that i definitely appreciate. Plus this video is super titties! Enjoy!!
There's something pretty rad about telling the world to suck it and sailing on a boat for a year with the one that you love, and then coming home and writing one of the dopest albums of the year, and then getting picked up by a major record label and touring and never having to work a shitty job ever again........ I'm not sure which part of that equation is dope but I'm pretty sure it's the whole fucking thing.......... Peep Tennis's new video from yours truly it's pretty great!!!
OK so this last week has been pretty dope for Atlas Sound/Deerhunter fans..... Bradford Cox has released three volumes of his bedroom recorded mix-tapes, For Free!!! It's kinda ridiculous. That brings us to a grand total of 41 songs..... That's a 41 song bombshell that this kid just dropped on the world. I mean seriously if you got all that music stored up inside, you gotta get it out somehow. Thanks for the jams string-bean. Here's a couple links to homeboys blog where you can download that shizz. Plus here's a track I dig from the most recent mix.... Mona Lisa Seriously bro John Lennon called he wants his voice back.
Mix 1 link click here Mix 2 link click here Mix 3 link click here
I've been rockin this Danish jam for a minute. I'm not really a coffee guy and I stopped smoking cigarettes a while ago but this jams got me jonsen for both, and maybe a baget..... Whatever stop looking at me like that and just listen to the song already!
It's really hard to describe and recreate the effects of certain drugs..... I think this new video for the song Hawaii does a pretty good job. There's always that all encompassing love that happens in the middle of the whole thing where you just feel like everything is connected to you and it usually ends with that enlightened state of euphoria where words do little to describe any feeling or realization that you might have just had (which I think is captured in the last few frames on the last girls face)..... Anywho I love this song and this band and this video is pretty rad too.
Here's some dope new shit for your ear holes. Gabriel Berrios from Totally Nebular has a rad solo project that's got me in a one man cartwheel competition with myself. Enjoy and happy buy nothing day!!!
Tune your ears to these dope ass thanksgiving jams. SNL's Jay Pharoah is amazing and his impersonations are crazy accurate. Peep his rendition of Jay-Z, Drake, and the late great Biggie Smalls to see what some of there takes on some killer gobble-jams would be....... enjoy and Happy Turkey Day!
Holy shit, tomorrow night is gonna be outta control crazy badass as fuckin shit!!!! It's New Mexico's album release party at the Tin Can Alehouse. I'll be there going absolutely Ba-fucking-nanas. It's gonna be so rad; Mrs. Magician, one of my new favorite SD bands, is gonna be there too, killing it as usual. And Scruffles, Travis Trevisan from tape deck's new side project, will be there along with Grand Tarantula. Shit's gonna get so nutty. But to hold you over till tomorrow check out this rad video of New Mexico preforming "Case Closed". See you at Tin Can SD.
Last night was the release of Spike Jonze video for the Arcade fire's jam, "The Suburbs". He paints a very beautiful picture filled with longing and love that can be found much easier being a teen under the shelter of the suburbs. He does a great job of tearing down the suburban world and bringing real life problems into the surroundings of this group of lovable kids. I can't stop watching this.
And here's some older footage of them killing it live in 2003. There's no question why these guys sell more albums than everyone else.
San Diego's new garage thunder is TRAP GOLD. There's a little bit of fire goin through the air in my house right now cause I've had this song on repeat for the majority of the day. Pick up their EP for free ,cause they're just that rad. Seriously this song makes me wanna rob a bank and drink whisky and shoot guns and get into fights and flex my mucsles and......... well you get the point.
Last Thursday night Jeff Goldblum pulled off the raddest performance I've seen him do since Space the infinite frontier. Who knew he could slay it on the piano? And is it just me or is Biz Markie just a huge ass Tracy Morgan?
And I gotta throw this jam in there cause I've been goin a lil Jimmy crazy. This song is so effin dope!!!
Oh man I don't even know where to start with this video. Things have been evolving so fast in music over the last few years that anything is possible. Musical talent coupled with insane technical neediness and some crazy awesome ass shit can happen. Watch Glasser geek out in this explanation for the song "Treasury of we"
San Diego has been holding it's own in the music scene over the last few months and that train isn't about to stop anytime soon. TV Girl has been getting some recognition outside of SD. With their melodic feel good jams that would be best enjoyed on a moon lit beach with wine stained teeth and a pretty girl, you can't go wrong. Pick up some of their tunes for free here and check out "If you want it", after the jump.
This Tuesday the 16th of November Blackbird Blackbird will be playing Soda bar with Melted Toys and The Woodsman. I highly suggest you show up and get your Mellow on, cause that shit's gonna be the cat's meow like a motha fuka!! Here's a new remix that they just put out of Warpaint's hit song "Undertow".
If I was Katy Perry's Dad I would have lodged a bullet in my brain, like, forever ago. I mean shit you're really just gonna straight make a song about how you get shit faced on the beach and all you wanna do is get dicked-up by some dude who looks like his name should be Muscles. Keep it to yourself sweetie, your pops is gonna have a heart attack. Not to mention your like the only chick in history to get kicked off of sesame street for looking too much like a whore and begging to change your clothes in front of fucking Elmo........ But luckily for me I'm not Katy's dad so I think that this shit is super comedy. Keep up the good work.
I've been crossing my fingers that the crew over at yours truly would do a live sesh with Warpaint. Guess what, it's finally happened. These girls have been flooring me for a little while now and I'm slowly becoming obsessed with the sound that they are becoming. I've been heartbroken since the 2007 break up of my favorite all girl band Electrelane and this has been a nice stitch towards the open wound, not to mention these girls are pretty easy on the eyes. Undertow
The cat's over at Pogo never cease to amaze with their video mash-ups. This one in particular is crazy impressive. I definitely have a special place in my heart for the film UP. I really like that they decided to use the little boys voice as the lead for the song. I feel that by doing so it absolutely represents the wonder and magic that is found in the film..... Enjoy
Tonight Kisses will be at Soda Bar filling the air with their melodic mess of nostalgic beats. So cruz out San Diego, and get your melancholic grove on. Peep this dope video for their hit track, People can do the most amazing things.....
This video was brought to my attention earlier today, by my friend Jen, and it got me all types of excited for next years Coachella. I heard a rumor that Outkast is gonna be there. Can you even imagine? If that happens I'll be front row for "Hey ya" Slamin down big time with hella broads. Peep this dope ass footage directed by Sam O' Hare...... It feels like your watching the SIMS. TOTEM, you guys best be doin your pinkie exercises!!!!
So a while back my good friend Tommy B and I decided to start a band called Full blown man sized baby dick. The deal is that we can only make songs on the spot, and usually only after a few drinks. They mostly consist of me playing guitar and Tommy rapping about two randomly picked subjects. In this particular jam session the subject matter is buttholes and Mexican baseball. And I should add that the back up vocals are by my good friend Ryan Hume. Please enjoy.
So I've been compiling an end of the year mix for a lil while now and I came up with way too many songs. So I pulled out 20 of those jams at random. I'm pretty stoked on the outcome and I think I might make another one with the rest of the years hits but for now enjoy More Yesness Vol. 1. And peep the cover art I made, I'm pretty sure it's a cracked out tooth fairy but it can be whatever you want....... Enjoy! Click here to download More Yesness Vol. 1 PS. The tracks might load out of order cause itunes is retarded but you'll get the point
A little over a week ago Phil Elverum released Song Island Vol. 2. A compilation of some of his better works that were woven together over the past 8 years. It spans 31 songs long but if for some reason your ears have never been blessed by the musical presence of Phil's projects, either The Microphones or Mount Eerie, this would be a spectacular way to catch up. Here's a few teasers.
La Sera's new video for Never come around is pretty effed up and I thought it might be good for Halloween. This chick is off her rocker, bitches give stitches, but even so I still kinda want to get all up on her shit...... Oh well. Wait till the end it's super comedy. Happy Halloween see you kids at soda bar!!!!!
Last night, at Soda Bar, Roxy Jones had their album release show for Lullabies and Warcries. Needless to say,the show was poppin off like Orville Redenbacher. Below is some footage that I shot of these dudes killin it on stage. I'd also like to note that Peter Graves is the king of on stage banter, seriously it's my favorite. Enjoy!
The next couple of days are good vibes for the San Diego music scene. Tomorrow is the release of Lullabies and Warcries, the new album from one of my favorite local bands, Roxy Jones. The following day Mrs. Magician releases their new 7" and will be playing a show with Jail Weddings. Come out and rock your dick off like little Sebastian here.
Roxy Jones: 10/28 @ the soda bar Mrs. Magician 10/29 @the soda bar
